Tibetan Monks July 2010

A group of visiting Tibetan monks will begin creating a sand mandala on Sunday, July 25, and will continue until the closing ceremony on August 1. The Tibetan art form of sand painting involves the ritualized creation and destruction of a mandala made from colored sand, representing the impermanent nature of life. In this process, millions of grains of colored sand are carefully placed into a prescribed iconography over the course of
days or weeks; once the mandala is complete it is then ritualistically destroyed. On previous US tours the monks have displayed this sacred art in major metropolitan museums, and in July they come to Hotchkiss. This is a do-not-miss event for art aficionados and spiritual seekers alike. During the week, an area in the main gallery will be roped off, but will be able to be viewed from the upper and lower galleries.
