The Creamery Arts Center continues to reach out to senior citizens through the Senior Outreach program headed up by our Education Director, Stephen Leitzsey. Demonstrations have included weaving and spinning demonstrations, a flower bookmark workshop, a clay workshop, a wire-wrapped gemstone jewelry demo, a multi-media presentation on birds, a presentation by the author of “The Yellowstone, Forever!” by the author, an oil-wash abstract workshop, and a series of three watercolor workshops. This program engages Delta County seniors in a variety of ways, through the efforts of the Creamery’s artists and volunteers. Artist volunteers have gone to the PACE senior center in Eckert, to the Crossroads residence in Delta and a nursing home in Paonia.
Creamery Arts Center artist, Rita Clagett has also created a project honoring the lives of our seniors. She did video interviews of seniors 65 and older. Some of the seniors she has interviewed have lived in the area for five generations going back to pioneer days. She believes these recorded interviews are a “wonderful way to celebrate and interact” with seniors, learn from their histories, and give the recordings to their families. Rita took portraits of each senior interviewed, and put on a show at the Creamery in our Peach gallery from September 13 through October 7, 2013 featuring these portraits, the watercolors from Sherry Polcyn’s workshops and an endless audio loop with snippets of the senior’s stories. Many of our community were able to attend and enjoy both the photographs and the interviews.
